A loud noise is a key sign that something is wrong with your boiler, but what could be causing it? Well, there are a number of possible reasons why your boiler is making loud noises, especially if it is aging and reaching the end of its life cycle.

If your household is giving off energy through noise pollution, then it’s more than likely that it’s doing a poor job of keeping your home warm! Spotting the signs of a boiler issue, and getting your boiler repaired as quickly as possible can save yourself unnecessary costs on your energy.

Find out some of the issues with your boiler that could be keeping you up at night, and how you can get them fixed.

What are normal sounds that your boiler should make?

Boilers make noises when they’re up and running, just like any highly functional machine such as your laptop, car or dishwasher.

So, your boiler is bound to make noises throughout the day whenever you turn your hot tap on or switch the heating on. It’s important to distinguish the difference between a bad noise and normal noises for your boiler to make.

Some normal noises that you should hear coming from your boiler include:

  • Deep rumbling sound. This usually happens when you turn on the gas heater, if you switch on your gas burner or cooker hob.
  • Quiet whirling sound. When you switch the heating on, the pump circulates water around the boiler and sends it to your radiators which makes a quiet yet distinct sound that you don’t need to worry about.
  • Occasional clicking. If you’re using thermostat controls and choose to switch the heating on, then the sound of the valves sounds like a clicking and is completely normal.

What noises shouldn’t your boiler make?

If your boiler is faulty and there’s something wrong happening inside the unit, it’s likely that it will tell you about it. Loud noises are a key sign that your boiler isn’t functioning properly, and you should look to get it fixed as soon as possible.

Bad noises that you shouldn’t be hearing include:

  • Loud gurgling sounds. Air could be trapped in your boiler if it is gurgling, which isn’t ideal. To solve this, the air will need to be released by bleeding your radiators and ensuring pressure levels are normal.
  • Grinding noises. If your boiler is making grinding noises, then it’s likely to be caused by a faulty pump, which can dangerous and require immediate assistance from an engineer.
  • Humming noises. This could be a sign that your water pressure is too high and causing pressure on your valves and pipes, which could cause further issues along the line.
  • Dripping sounds. If you can hear water dripping then you will have a leak in your boiler unit, which will require an engineer to repair.
  • Vibrating sounds. This could be caused by trapped air, which can be solved by bleeding your radiator, or your boiler could be being affected by limescale build up or old pipes. If it’s the latter, you may need to phone a local engineer.

Can I fix a loud boiler myself?

If your boiler is making a gurgling noise and air is trapped in your radiators and your boiler, then you can solve the issue by bleeding your radiator. This is not a technical task and a quick fix, meaning that there’s no use in hiring someone to do the job (unless you really want to).

When it comes to repairing pipework or valves that are causing issues, it is a much more technical and demanding which will require assistance from a qualified professional engineer to do the job.

Boiler engineers are qualified to do the job safely and ensure that there are no further complications for your boiler. If you try and do the job yourself for most cases, it could be hazardous and puts you at risk of further damaging your boiler unit which could be costly.
